Project Description

Numerical Prediction of Primary Atomization – A Major Challenge for Combustion Simulations

The importance of atomization in liquid fuel combustion will be discussed. Special emphasis will be put on the challenge of predicting primary atomization of air blast systems, which are typically used in gas
turbines and aero engines. The present state of advanced DNS modeling approaches will presented and future developments will elucidated.

Rainer Koch is leader of the two phase flow and combustion research at the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery at the KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). His research interest cover the subjects around aero engine combustion: Liquid fuel preparation, reacting two phase flows, novel low emission combustion systems and combustion instabilities.
